Special cellars in the holiday region Bolzano and environs:
Felsenkeller Laimburg, Vadena
At the end of the 1980s the Winery of the Province of South Tyrol was in need of more space. Because the winery is built directly at the side of a rock, an extension into Monte di Mezzo was the obvious solution. The cellar in the rocks, the Felsenkeller, excites with its reddish-brown porphyry stone and enables the bottles to be stored at a naturally constant room temperature. In addition, a 300 m² presentation room was blasted from the rock.
Wine bunker and wine tunnel on Schloss Korb, Missiano | Appiano
From the outside an archaic monster and symbol of war, from the inside a special wine cellar that is also used for cultural events. In addition to the wine bunker the wine estate Schloss Korb also has a wine tunnel. In the past the tunnel provided protection during air strikes, today it houses the concrete oval casks.
Storing wine in concrete is not a modern invention. The shape of oval casks, however, is: They represent the golden section. Dead angles are avoided and the wine can flow freely. This brings forth its best flavour. Concrete oval casks, also called concrete eggs, are currently used by the Schloss Korb wine estate and the Hofstätter winery.
The Dominikus wine estate contains a virtual maze of cellars. Driven by his passion for digging and building cellars, Dominikus Morandell created a cellar experience of paths and rooms below his wine estate.
It used to be customary for special wine barrels to have their own special look, and to tell their own story. The bottoms of the barrels were carved and beautifully decorated. Old wine barrels decorated with carvings can be found in the wineries of Girlan, St. Michael and on the wine estate Elena Walch.
