Lago di Caldaro
One of the warmest swimming lakes in the Alps and a paradise for lovers of activity
Lago di Caldaro is situated South of Caldaro, at the foot of Castelchiaro and surrounded by vineyards. The lake is approx. 2 km long and 1 km wide. It is one of the largest lakes in South Tyrol and the warmest of the swimming lakes in the Alpine region. Lago di Caldaro, which developed from an old river bed of the Adige, has an average depth of only four meters. This makes for pleasant temperatures of 17-19°C in spring and up to 28°C in summer.
A paradise for lovers of activity
Lago di Caldaro is an Eldorado for active people: Not only for swimmers, the lake is also a haven for windsurfers and sailors, especially in the afternoon. It is populated with pedal boats, rowing boars and fishermen. There is a walking path for a circular walk or bike ride around Lago di Caldaro. A climb to Castelchiaro is also well worth the effort. In winter, ice skaters practice their turns.
Natura 2002 region
At the southern shore of Lago di Caldaro starts the largest surviving wetland between the Po valley and the main ridge of the Alps. The nature reserve “Natura 2002” is also the junction of the main flight paths of migrating birds. Bird watchers can see over 100 different types of birds here. The nature discovery trail takes visitors into a part of the biotope. A look-out tower offers a good viewing platform.
