A stroll around Lake Kaltern or a hike through the vineyards is a great way to take in the landscape. If you prefer to gain some altitude, you can take the Mendel Cable Car to the Mendel Pass or explore the trails of the Trudner Horn Nature Park. Here, you’ll find routes through forests and alpine meadows, as well as the impressive Bletterbach Gorge, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
There are also many family-friendly trails, perfect for enjoying nature and getting some exercise. Whether you’re looking for a relaxed walk or an active hike, we have the right trail for you.
Ten tips for safe hiking in the mountains
- Always carefully plan your hikes,
summer or winter: knowing the length and difficulty of the hike is
essential for a safe trip into the mountains. Also tell your family,
your hosts or the hut wardens where you are going.
- Check the latest weather forecast
before each tour and keep an eye on the conditions while hiking. Hut
wardens are also a useful source of information about the weather
situation nearby. If you are hiking in winter, check the latest avalanche report beforehand – and take it into account.
- Objectively assess your physical fitness and choose your tour appropriately. Set off early in the morning and give yourself plenty of time to get back before dark.
- Set a moderate and regular walking pace. Take plenty of breaks, especially if you are walking with children.
- Make sure you drink enough fluids! The most suitable drinks are
water, tea or natural fruit juices. Nutrient-rich foods such as
wholemeal bread, dried fruit, nuts, etc. make ideal provisions – and you can find all of South Tyrol’s drinking water points here!
- Make sure you have the right equipment, in particular sturdy
footwear: good walking boots give secure support and relieve the strain
on your joints.
- Choose lightweight, breathable clothing and appropriate spare clothes. Always make sure to pack your rucksack with
clothing to protect against the cold and rain. You should also always
carry a first aid kit with you and, especially in winter, always take
emergency gear.
- Always be considerate of the weaker members of your group. Always
warn other hikers of possible dangers and give first aid in an
emergency.
- Treat nature with respect: do not make too much noise, do not leave any litter and treat plants with care. Show respect for protected species of flora and fauna.
- Always follow the signs and stay on marked paths and trails.
Consult your hiking map from time to time and turn back in good time if
in doubt.
