Törggelen
South Tyrol’s Tasty Autumn Tradition
Törggelen is a centuries-old tradition in South Tyrol, celebrating the end of the grape harvest. The term derives from the Latin "torquere", meaning "to press," referring to the "Torggl", the traditional wine press. Originally, winemakers and farmers would gather after the harvest to taste the new wine and celebrate together.
Today, Törggelen is an essential part of South Tyrol’s autumn culture. From early October to late November, traditional wine taverns (Buschenschänke) and farm inns (Hofschänke) welcome guests for cozy, social evenings. The experience usually begins with a walk through the colorful autumn landscape, followed by a hearty meal featuring "Nuier" (new wine) and "Siaßer" (sweet grape must). Typical dishes include barley soup, Schlutzkrapfen (stuffed pasta), dumplings, cured meat, homemade sausages with sauerkraut, and for dessert, sweet Krapfen and roasted chestnuts.
In Südtirols Süden, Törggelen is also a cherished tradition. The charming Buschenschänke in the region offer the perfect setting for enjoying traditional autumn specialties paired with outstanding local wines – a true highlight of South Tyrol’s golden autumn!
