Modern architecture
Modern architecture in the holiday region Bolzano and environs
Building culture as statement
The building culture and building style reveal much about the tradition of a region and the identity of the people living there. South Tyrol has countless of architectural monuments from the various centuries. In recent times numerous new buildings were added that impress with their modern character and quality.
Modern architecture in the holiday region Bolzano and environs:
EURAC – European Academy in Bolzano
EURAC – European Academy in Bolzano
The construction of EURAC combined protected old buildings with light-filled new building elements from glass, steel and concrete. The red of the historic external façades interplays with transparency.
Museion in Bolzano
Museion in Bolzano
The Museion - museum for modern art, is a transparent and fluid, silver building that symbolises the unifying effect of art for the groups of people belonging to the various languages spoken here. The façade facing the Talvera can also be used as a media wall. Also of interest are the two elegantly curved bridges connecting the districts on both sides of the river Talvera.
Lower cable car station of the Renon cable car in Bolzano
Lower cable car station of the Renon cable car in Bolzano
Thanks to the shape of the property, the oval footprint is best suited to making full use of the available area. Much emphasis was placed on the use of simple and robust details and materials. Copper and glass are the connecting elements to the mountain station.
Lido on Lago di Caldaro in Caldaro
Lido on Lago di Caldaro in Caldaro
Because of the raised architecture the swimming pool on Lago di Caldaro looks like a swimming pool on a ship’s deck.
MMM – Messner Mountain Museum Firmian near Bolzano
MMM – Messner Mountain Museum Firmian near Bolzano
Firmiano Castle is imposing and archaic. The masonry was specially secured for the Messner Mountain Museums. The inserts of corroding steel can be removed at any time.
Parish church in Laives

The Romanesque and Neo-Gothic parts of the building are in exciting symbiosis with the modern extension. Outside, the modern extension copies the shapes of the mountains, inside the elegantly curved lines of floor, walls and ceiling surprise visitors, as does the sophisticated lighting that illuminates the wood in gold tones.
