Cultural highlights in Appiano

One of the regions in the Alps with the most castles and fortresses

Appiano also has a convincing cultural offer. The region awaits you with the most castles and fortresses and historic country houses. Appiano also benefits from beautiful churches and chapels and interesting exhibitions. A particularly exciting site is found above San Paolo: the Villa Romana. It is currently being excavated by archaeologists and should soon be open to visitors.

Hocheppan Castle

Hocheppan Castle, which was built in 1130 by Count Ulrich II, gave its name to the community Eppan. Art lovers will get their money’s worth here: The Romanesque frescos of the castle’s chapel represent religious motifs and give insight into daily life in the 13th century.

Appiano triangle of castles

Castello di Appiano, the ruins of Castel Boymont, and Castel Corba make up the Appiano triangle of castles above Missiano | Appiano. The historic buildings are completed by the Torre delle Polveri and can all be visited on a three-hour long circular walk.

Boymont Castle

Boymont Castle was commissioned by the Counts of Eppan around 1230 and was merely a residential castle, until it was almost completely burned to the ground by arsonists in 1425. Today the ruins of Boymont Castle are fully refurbished and offer a tavern.

MMM Firmian in Firmiano Castle

Firmiano Castle is one of the oldest fortresses in South Tyrol. Since 2006 it has been the home of the heart of the Messner Mountain Museums, the museums circle set up by extreme mountain climber Reinhold Messner.

Castel Moos-Schulthaus

Castel Moos and the Schulthaus country house are situated in Appiano | Monte. In the buildings dating back to the 13th century there is a museum for medieval domestic culture with a complete kitchen, Gothic parlour and old pieces of furniture as well as wonderfully preserved frescoes.

Cathedral in the country

In San Paolo | Appiano there is an oversized church, also called the cathedral in the country. It was built by the aristocracy at the end of the 15th, beginning of the 16th century as a status symbol and is one of South Tyrol’s most important sacred buildings. The tower is the third tallest in South Tyrol.
